During almost two month in the Fall of 1984, from 3th September to 30 October, Rinpoche stayed at Karma Chodrub Gyamtso Ling in Brussels, where he extensively taught:

- Treasury of Knowledge, chapter 8.1: The Stages of Meditation of Shamatha and Vipashyanā. Rinpoche gave 14 talks for his students learning Tibetan and 8 talks to the public audience.

In December 1984 - January 1985, Rinpoche also taught at Samye Ling Scotland. During his visit, Rinpoche offered 18 talks on chapter 8.1 as well as 19 talks on chapter 6.3 from the Treasury of Knowledge. These recordings were kindly provided by Kagyu Samye Ling.
In Athens, April 1985, Rinpoche offered 4 talks on this chapter along with two talks on the essence of mind, the buddha nature being endowed with the seed of compassion and of wisdom.
In Barcelona, Rinpoche devoted 4 talks to the shamatha section and concluded with teaching vipashyana.
The talks on chapter 8.1 that you find here, later resulted in the publication of a booklet in English, called The Stages of Meditation of Shamatha and Vipashyanā. You find 2 Q/A talks in Tibetan only from May 1985 where the translators requests clarifications for their translation.
