In 1989, Rinpoche visited the 3-year retreat in Marcola, Oregon. This retreat center was founded by Venerable Kalu Rinpoche and named Joyful Garden of the 5 Golden Dharmas. The retreat teacher in residence at that time was Venerable Lama Tsang Tsing. He currently lives in Eugene, Oregon, and oversees Kagyu Dakshang Choling Center. When Rinpoche visited in 1989, the end of the 3-years retreat was drawing near, and Rinpoche chose to offer teachings on the 3rd Karmapa's Mahamudra Aspiration Prayer with commentary by the 8th Situ Rinpoche called Mahamudra Teaching of the Supreme Siddhas

Visiting Kagyu Droden Kunchab, the 3-year retreat in Mendocino that is guided under Venerable Lama Lodro, 29 September - 2 October 1998, Rinpoche chose to teach about the importance of the view and meditation on emptiness. Rinpoche emphasized how the view connects to yidam deity practice and drew parallels to the songs of realization, especially songs by the lord of yogins, Milarepa.
