In the first two years at Dechen Choling, that is 2000 and 2001, Khenpo Rinpoche taught programmes entitled "Laying the Foundations for Vajrayana", developing the principles of emptiness and buddha nature. In 2000, the main focus of his teachings was one of the five root texts of Maitreya and Asanga, the Uttaratantra Shastra or The Treatise on Buddhanature. In 2001, two more of the five works of Maitreya and Asanga were studied: Distinguishing Phenomena and Pure Being, and Distinguishing the Middle and the Extremes.
At the summer course held at Dechen Choling, France, 7-14 July 2002, Rinpoche began his series of teachings on mahamudra, using the text, Mahamudra - The Ocean of Definitive Meaning by the Ninth Gyalwang Karmapa, Wangchuk Dorje,
That year, to a group of over a hundred tantrikas and sadhakas, Khenpo Rinpoche taught the preliminaries and the shamatha section of the text. In a series of parallel public talks, Rinpoche continued his exposition of emptiness, using selected verses from the noble Nagarjuna and Chandrakirti.
In 2003, Rinpoche continued teaching from the Ninth Karmapa's text, focusing on the vipashyana section. At the end of the course, Rinpoche offered 2 talks on the Four Yogas. In his public teachings that year he again emphasized the teachings on emptiness using his recently published book The Sun of Wisdom.
