From the chapter, Caring for the Teacher Shakya Guna, སྟོན་པ་ཤཱཀྱ་གུ་ན་རྗེས་སུ་བཟུང་བའི་སྐོར། Shakya Guna asks Milarepa, "If these appearances and this samsaric state do not exist, then there is no reason to practice. If mind does not exist, no one could become a scholar. If there is no Lama, no one could know any practice. Please tell me the defining characteristics of each of these and point out mind." In response Milarepa sings him this song of realization.
