When the Jetsün arrives at his birthplace after having been trained by Marpa, he finds that everything has been destroyed and that his mother has died. Gathering the bones of her skeleton, Milarepa experiences an immense sadness, which decisively clarifies for him the pointlessness of samsaric existence and he resolves to go and practice dharma.
