Things that are non-existent can appear, they are like illusion, like a dream, Mahayana view,
The root is the clinging to a self, one is able to become free of that conception and achieve nirvana

all states of trouble, afflictive stages all arise holding transitory collection,
it's necessary to refute the self because the root of all problems is clinging to a self,
Nagarjuna: 'Conditions existence is like an illusion, a mirage and so on,
and through the intelligence which knows this
one avoids being polluted with respect to previous and later.'
